Get the best ever school photos of your child this year
Posted by Jana on 15 Sep 2015 / 2 Comments

Is it just me or does it seem that the school photos sometimes turn out less than fabulous!  It’s great that they take the photos at school because an annual memory is a beautiful thing.  However for me, school photos are a great reminder that I have to update the photos of my own children.  This year when you book your family photos during the month of September (my favourite month of the year) or October, you could have a set of ‘school photos’ for free.  Book a session outdoors in the beautiful fall colours and we’ll make sure we get a great individual shot of each child during the session to use as their school photo.  Order any of our keepsake or digital packages and our special school photo package shown below is our gift to you, one for each child!

Package includes one 8×10 print, two 5×7 prints, twelve jumbo wallet sized prints and a digital sharing photo file for Facebook or email.

Gearing Up for Back-to-School Photos
Posted by Jana on 28 Aug 2015 / 0 Comment

With school just around the corner, we wanted to help prepare you with some tips for your best back to school photos!

Tip #1:  Some of the best photos are those that involve no pose, but rather capture every day life and the first few days of school.  Walking down the street to the bus stop, or engaging with siblings and friends are just a few ways to do so.

Tip #2:  Snap a picture of your child and their new teacher. (more…)

The Do’s and Don’ts of Photographing Family Reunions
Posted by Jana on 22 Jul 2015 / 0 Comment

It’s that time of year where family get together for reunions!  What better time to book photographs than when grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins are visiting?!  If you want to produce some great photos, keep these tips in mind when discussing photos with your family and your photographer:

  • Scope out a location ahead of time.  Try to go for a “distraction-free” setting.  For example, a field with no buildings or houses in the background is great.  There will be a lot of faces to photograph, so the simpler the background, the better.
  • Plan a time with your family when the photo will be taken.  We recommend sometime in the evening and in the shade, so that people are not squinting in the photo.
  • Have everyone wear solid colours.  This will help the attention be drawn to faces,  not the clothing.  Tell your group to try and stay away from big logos and bold stripes, if at all possible.
  • Group people according to families/couples.  Make sure everyone is standing near his or her family.  If the event is centered around one or two people, put them in the center of the group (for example, grandma and grandpa’s anniversary!)
  • Do some close up shots.  Talk with your photographer about doing close up shots of each family.  This is another great way to get some family photos for Christmas cards!
  • At a loss of how to make your photos memorable?  Try doing some shots lying down, making silly faces, everyone jumping at once, or themed.

As always, the best photos you get will be the ones taken from a professional photographer.  Talk to us today to book your family reunion photos!

Summer Play and Fun Candid Shots
Posted by Jana on 26 Jun 2015 / 0 Comment

Miko Photography summer family photo sessionIt’s that time of year! Summer has FINALLY arrived! Kids are out of school, and it’s time to let the fun times begin! What activities do you have planned for the summer? Let us know in the comments below. If you are in the Calgary area and are looking for some fun summer ideas, check out this list of 100 Things to do in Calgary This Summer.

Some of our favourite sessions are family photos at the beach, or creek sessions where we can get some fun candid shots, in addition to a nice portrait. The kids grow up so fast, and it is always neat to look back on summer outdoor photos where everyone is naturally already having a good time enjoying the warm weather and new adventures. (more…)
